31 Students from the Catholic High Strings Ensemble took to the Cage at Kallang to experience the World Cup fever. The students were grouped as prominent teams challenging this June’s tournament- namely Brazil, England, France and Spain.

A round-robin format was used to determine the best 2 teams, who would go on to compete in the finals. It was a close affair as all 4 teams battled hard for their country and showed fantastic team work. Invited teachers joined in the fun too, with Miss Tan saving a few goals as the goalkeeper and Mr. Zak scoring 2 wonderful goals. A total of 12 goals were scored in the group stages. After 3 games each, Brazil emerged top, followed closely by England, Spain and France respectively.

The highly anticipated final pitted the flamboyant Brazilians against the hardworking Englishmen. It was, yet again, a tightly contested game as both teams matched each other stride for stride. Clear cut goal-scoring chances were few and far between, as both sets of defence held firm all the way to the end of regulation time. It was down to the dreaded penalties to decide who brings home the World Cup.

The pressure was evidently high as supporters from both sides gathered behind the goal to cheer for their favourite teams. Brazil took the first spot kick and successfully converted it. England was up next, but the penalty was saved by the Brazilian keeper, much to the dismay of the English supporters. But the match was not over and anything could happen in football. Brazil went on the miss the next spot kick, while England converted their second to tie the scores of 1-1. The last kicker for Brazil shot narrowly wide, paving the way for England Captain Brandon to seal victory with his powerful shot into the bottom corner!

Soccer With A Vision congratulates everyone from the Catholic High Strings Ensemble for achieving the SYF Gold this year. Coaches Vincent, Nic, Jonathan and Fabian understand that you guys put in loads of time, hard work, sweat and tears into the preparations and were deservedly rewarded with this prestigious honour. We hope the students, teachers and parents enjoyed the 2 hr mini soccer carnival. We wish the students all the best for your studies and future competitions.
