Our opponents? SAFFC, the reigning S-league champions! But that's not all. The daunting challenge would be to play in big, "clown-like" shoes! Well, it’s all in the name of charity!

"Project Baby Love" aims to create awareness and raise funds for Santuary House, a noble organisation which provides foster and medical care to babies and children who have been physically-abused and abandoned. Babies with black eyes. Children with broken bones. Young ones abandoned by their parents. It’s sad to hear that such stories actually exist in Singapore. We feel this is a personal call to do our part for these unfortunate babies, and what better way to do it than through our expertise. The students were grouped as prominent teams challenging this June’s tournament- namely Brazil, England, France and Spain.

A round-robin format was used to determine the best 2 teams, who would go on to compete in the finals. It was a close affair as all 4 teams battled hard for their country and showed fantastic team work. Invited teachers joined in the fun too, with Miss Tan saving a few goals as the goalkeeper and Mr. Zak scoring 2 wonderful goals. A total of 12 goals were scored in the group stages. After 3 games each, Brazil emerged top, followed closely by England, Spain and France respectively.

The highly anticipated final pitted the flamboyant Brazilians against the hardworking Englishmen. It was, yet again, a tightly contested game as both teams matched each other stride for stride. Clear cut goal-scoring chances were few and far between, as both sets of defence held firm all the way to the end of regulation time. It was down to the dreaded penalties to decide who brings home the World Cup.

The pressure was evidently high as supporters from both sides gathered behind the goal to cheer for their favourite teams. Brazil took the first spot kick and successfully converted it. England was up next, but the penalty was saved by the Brazilian keeper, much to the dismay of the English supporters. But the match was not over and anything could happen in football. Brazil went on the miss the next spot kick, while England converted their second to tie the scores of 1-1. The last kicker for Brazil shot narrowly wide, paving the way for England Captain Brandon to seal victory with his powerful shot into the bottom corner!

Soccer With A Vision congratulates everyone from the Catholic High Strings Ensemble for achieving the SYF Gold this year. Coaches Vincent, Nic, Jonathan and Fabian understand that you guys put in loads of time, hard work, sweat and tears into the preparations and were deservedly rewarded with this prestigious honour. We hope the students, teachers and parents enjoyed the 2 hr mini soccer carnival. We wish the students all the best for your studies and future competitions.
Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06053046306098092628noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1228860758524262278.post-81056993924577923752010-05-31T19:10:00.006+08:002010-05-31T21:33:58.571+08:00Soccer clinic with APS
Spearheading the coaches was one of our academy directors, Fong Xiong Kun. It was a wonderful experience for the boys, who not only enjoyed themselves, but also learnt much from about the values the academy brought forward.

The session kicked off with some simple yet fun soccer drills to build camaraderie between the boys and coaches. The game "Han-tum Bola" really got the boys going. A series of games followed as the boys learnt some of the more technical aspects of football. The 2-sided game was obviously the highlight of the day, with the boys showing eagerness to showcase their new-found skills to their peers. The teacher-in-charge, Mr Khusni, also joined in the fun. The coaches were impressed with the boys' enthusiasm and skill levels.

As usual, the session is not just purely about soccer. Coach Fong always emphasised the purpose of his trainings to the boys. One particular value highlighted was the ability to look at things positively. Fong, in his usual quick-witted manner, explained in one of his drills, "It's ok to make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes in football, as well as life in general. What's important is to learn from them and look forward."

I'm sure the boys at APS thoroughly enjoyed the session and learnt valuable lessons from the programme. We look forward to another collaboration with APS in future!

The day-long event was greeted with much enthusiasm, with former and current Victorians taking centre stage in the tournament. The event presented a fantastic chance for Victorians old and new to catch up with each other and make new friends.

Beyond all the pleasantaries laid a fierce sense of competition. The players representing SWAV were coy yet quietly confident of our abilities, marching through the group stages with 4 wins and 1 draw. Coach Vincent was the top scorer with 3 goals, followed closely by invited striker Cheng Wei and former VJC star Brandon with 2 goals each. Marshalled well by Malcolm, Nic and Mark, as well as able substitutes in the form of Daryl and JR, our defence held firm with clean sheets in the group stage.

The quarterfinal was a tense affair. SWAV narrowly edging out through penalties, with Malcolm saving the day. Nick scored a spectacular goal in the semi-finals to put SWAV into the finals. In the process, coach Vincent took a knock and had to sit out of the finals. The finals pitted 2 of the best teams in the competition, with the opponents boosting the current set of VJC players who are at peak competitive forms. With 3 Nepalese and a national age group winger, the VJC team looked sharp and strong. SWAV matched them stride for stride, attack for attack, but was unfortunate to lose through a last-second counter attack.

SOCCER With A Vision thanks Malcolm, Nic, Mark, Daryl, Jun Rong, Ariff, Cheng Wei and Brandon for showing the crowd how good football should be played. Rave comments from spectators were raised regarding the quality of play and the understanding between our players. It was a wonderful day for SWAV, clinching her first honours and promoting the vision and mission of SWAV.

fabhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177533890155660388noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1228860758524262278.post-41082407444501478592009-12-27T00:49:00.009+08:002009-12-30T01:15:33.619+08:00SoccerWAV's 1st training session

17th December 2009 marks an all-important milestone in SoccerWAV’s journey- the first coaching session of the academy! After months of preparations dating back to early September, which includes writing proposals, defining our vision and mission, researching and preparing specialised programmes for women’s football, we finally got things going with our first batch of players to undergo our “Fundamentals Training Programme”. We are glad that our NUS IVP girls are the first ones who trialled our personalised training methods.

The” Fundamentals Training Programme” focuses on the basics of football- technique. With a combination of agility and technical drills, we helped build up the foundation of essential soccer skills. We started off with a dynamic warm-up, followed by a series of ladder and hurdle drills to improve acceleration and explosiveness. Our technique drills comprises of 3 important parts-control and passing, receiving and turning, and dribbling. Following that is a 2-man drill which emphasizes on crossing and finishing. Lastly a 7v7, 30-minute two-sided game provided the platform to showcase the skills they have learnt, and also injected the much needed competitiveness and fun into the programme.

When asked what they like about the programme, here are some of the responses by our inspired players:

“With more instructors, there were more eyes to correct mistakes of individuals, which was helpful and difficult for a single coach to achieve. The girls hardly have time for technical training especially between and just prior to games, and this was a good training to keep them in touch with their basics, which were of utmost importance and tend to be lacking in a girls’ game.” Wan Rong, former team captain

“It’s very personalized – e.g. individual timings of one obstacle course were taken. The coaches would relate drills to the games so the rationale behind every drill was made clear.” Istyana, right midfielder

“It was conducted in a light hearted and relaxing manner, yet it benefitted us a lot as it focused on the basics of football.” Jiayu, midfielder

“I like the way that different coaches seem to be leading different activities.” Yunxiu, defender

Here’s what they learnt from the programme:

“Little details that make a difference, for e.g. stopping the ball properly. Getting the basics right. Importance of technical ability. Yes, soccer is a science and an art!” Min Li, midfielder

“To play soccer well, one must master the basic skills well and not take it for granted.” Sarah, defender

Fong leading the girls in warm-up

Vincent demonstrating the agility drills

Fabian explaining the crossing-finishing drill

Tammy practising how to turn with the ball

The girls showing their dribbling skills

The girls doing the crossing-finishing drill

View more photos here!

View more videos here!

It’s a great start for SoccerWAV. Handpicked by former assistant national coach Fandi Ahmad to represent the national under-21 squad in the Sawarak Invitational International Tournament after winning the NFL and FA cup double with SAFSA, Fabian rose through the ranks and was promoted to the under-23 squad within a year. Having gone under the tutelage of footballing legends like Fandi Ahmad, V- Sundramoorthy and Terry Pathmanathan, Fabian learnt valuable coaching methods during his 2-year stint in the national training set-up. A transfer to Geylang United S-league squad in 2008 saw Fabian link up with 2 other Singapore footballing heros, namely ex-national captain Lim Tong Hai and former Malaysia Cup left winger D.Tokijan. Spending a total of 3 seasons in top flight S-league, Fabian has decided to take a break to focus on setting up this academy to pass on his experiences and inspire others who share the same passion for the game.

Aside from his outstanding achievements on the field, Fabian is equally astute in his academic pursuits. In 2006, he was awarded the prestigious National University of Singapore (NUS) Undergraduate Scholarship for being able to juggle his hectic professional soccer commitments with the equally demanding university educational requirements. His leadership qualities and humility made him a role model in his college and university teams. He was also active in helping to conduct soccer clinics for primary schools and charity orgnisations for the past 3 years.

Behind all his successes lay a series of failures which made Fabian a person whom many look up to. Most notably, he suffered a career-threatening knee injury in 2007, which sidelined him for more than 6 months. With discipline, determination and undying desire to compete in the top flight again, Fabian worked hard to get back to competitive football again. In fact, the failures are the ones that made him a stronger person, and the perfect example to inspire others to overcome the odds to achieve great things.

List of teams Fabian has represented:

NUS (2006-2010)

Jollilads Arsenal Football Club (2009)

Geylang United S-league Squad (2008)

Singapore U-23 Squad (Young Lions Football Club) (2006-2007)

Singapore U-21 Squad (2004-2005)

SAFSA (2004-2005)

Victoria Junior College (2002-2003)

Vincent Wong- Academy Development Director

Despite only starting competitive soccer while he was 16 in 2002, Vincent was selected to represent Singapore in the Asian Schools Tournament held in China the following year. He trained under Danish coach Kim Poulsen and together with the Singapore U-18 team which comprised current national players such as Khairul Amri, Isa Halim and Shaiful Esah. Subsequently, he received a call-up by to the U-18 team in 2004 which he decided to give a miss so as to concentrate on his upcoming A'levels. The next few years of his soccer career was spent with SAFSA, Geylang United and NUS where he picked up valuable skills and knowledge of the game while training under the various reknowned coaches. He eventually decided to give up his dream of pursuing professional football and move to coaching due to an increasing list of recurring injuries.

Vincent's success in soccer was a result of pure hard work, discipline and a lot of observation and analysis. Having studied at top schools and interacted with some of the top minds in the country, Vincent understood that pure hard work alone would not be enough for him achieve his goal. There was a need to analyse his training methods, his game, determine his strengths and weaknesses and observe good players so that he can better his game. Through the past few years, Vincent picked up valuable skills not only from a player's perspective but also from a coach's point of view. He now wishes to pass on these knowledge and skills to children and youths not only to train them to be good soccer players but also to inculcate the kind of values that would make them useful citizens to Singapore.

List of teams Vincent has played for throughout his soccer career:

NUS (2007-2010)

Geylang United Prime League Squad(2007-2009

SAFSA (2005-2006)

Victoria Junior College (2003-2004)

Singapore Combined Schools Team/Singapore U-18 (2003)

Victoria School (2002)

Fong Xiongkun - Events and Marketing Director

Fong Xiongkun has played active competitive football since his Junior College years. He was a part of the only (so-far) VJC double Gold Medallist football team in 2001 and 2002. Upon entering university, he played in the varsity team for all four of his undergraduate years, with NUS reaching four consecutive semi-final berths and culminating in a Gold Medal in 2009. In those years, he also continued playing football outside of school. He was registered as a prime league player with Paya Lebar Punggol in 2005, a prime league player with Tampines Rovers in 2006, and played in the National Football League 2 with Jollilads Arsenal in the 2007 and 2008 seasons. In 2006, he was also selected to represent Singapore in the ASEAN University Games held in Vietnam. Since graduating in May 2009, he trained regularly with the Woodlands S-league football team and is currently hoping to secure a professional footballing contract with an S-league club.

Xiongkun's passion for football has been alluded to insanity on a few occasions. His belief in the beauty of the game has yet to be tarnished by the ugliness of today's standards. He is currently also the secretary of Maju United Football Club where he works hard to inspire young boys and girls in the club to achieve their dreams, believe in their potential, and play football the way it is meant to be played.

List of teams Xiongkun has played for:

Ang Mo Kio United (2010)

NUS (2006-2009)

Jollilads Arsenal (2007-2008)

Combined University Team, Singapore (2006)

Tampines Rovers Football Club (2006)

Paya Lebar Punggol Football Club (2005)

Victoria Junior College (2001-2002)

astroshevhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11991088460067142346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1228860758524262278.post-85236498640292531762009-12-01T15:08:00.007+08:002010-06-15T12:46:26.143+08:00Services
1.
